Wire Jewelry - Beginner: Jump Rings

Hello everyone! It’s the start of the week and we’re going to learn Wire Jewelry -Beginner Lessons again. The past two weeks we have tackled two kinds of findings, the eye pins and head pinsand long with it, we’ve also learned how to make loops and use the eye pins in making drop earrings and as a connector. We’ve also learned how to construct simple earrings with the head pins. Today, we’re going to talk about jump rings. I know I have posted this tutorial twice already, but I’ll be posting this again as a part of Wire Jewelry - Beginner Lessons Series.

These are jump rings and just like the eye pins and head pins you’ll also find them in different sizes and gauges. In measuring jump rings you measure the inner circle or diameter.

For Chain Maille enthusiasts, jump rings is an essential finding for them since chain maille making requires only linking jump rings following a linking pattern.  Basically, jump rings are used as connector or for linking in jewelry making.

You could even create simple earrings just by linking or connecting jump rings

The important thing in handling these tiny rings is learning the proper way of opening and closing a jump ring. Jump rings are not a very delicate finding but if you open it the wrong way, it could break or lose its form. And once it loses its form, it’s hard to shape it back again into a perfect circle.

There are ready-made jump rings available at your friendly jewelry making supply stores but we could also handcraft them ourselves. This way, you could customize the size and you don’t have to stock a lot of jump rings but make some only if you need them.

XQDesigns created a tutorial how to make jump rings and with her tutorial, you’ll also learn the proper way of opening and closing a jump ring.
